Meet new AuScope Board member Professor Cam McCuaig
We would like to welcome Professor Cam McCuaig to AuScope’s Board of Directors. Cam brings a wealth of experience in research, minerals exploration and leadership to our team. Importantly, he will help deepen AuScope collaboration between academia and government with industry to help address Australia’s critical minerals challenge.
Meet Cam
Cam is currently Head of Geoscience Excellence in BHP’s Resource Centre of Excellence.
He graduated with Honours in Geology and Energy and Fuel Science from Lakehead University, followed by a PhD in Geology from the University of Saskatchewan. He then enjoyed 10 years with SRK Consulting, becoming a Director of the Australasian practice. In 2005, Cam became the inaugural Director of the Centre for Exploration Targeting (CET) at the University of Western Australia. At CET Cam built and led a team, of up to 90 staff and students, recognized as a global leader in applied research with the minerals industry.
Cam joined BHP in 2016. As the Head of Geoscience Excellence, Cam leads a team of experts that works globally across all commodities to ensure thought leadership in geoscience across the entire value chain, from exploration and discovery to closure.
Cam’s career has taken him to 43 countries on six continents, working in a wide variety of commodity systems from discovery through to production. He has trained >2500 geoscientists and remains an active mentor. In 2013, Cam received the Gibb-Maitland medal from the Geological Society of Australia for his contributions to Western Australian geology and mineral exploration. Cam remains an Adjunct Professor at The University of Western Australia.
“AuScope supports the geoscience data infrastructure that is allowing world leading pre-competitive geoscience datasets to be gathered and world class knowledge to be created by Australian geoscience government agencies and research organisations.
These data and knowledge are fundamental to unlocking Australia's mineral wealth, understanding its water resources, and informing how we interact with the Australian continent for the sustainable benefit of Australians. I am excited to be involved with the team.” — Professor Cam McCuaig
Helping AuScope collaborate deeper with industry
AuScope is now in its second year of delivering its 10-Year Strategy 2020 — 2030, including responding to the constituent Goal to ‘locate and better understanding Australia’s minerals, energy and groundwater services’. AuScope CEO, Dr Tim Rawling is excited for Cam’s knowledge to inform this work:
“Cam brings a very rare combination of experience spanning industry and academic research and a passion for geoscience that will provide the AuScope community with insightful leadership as we move to implement our 10-year Strategy 2020 — 2030 and refine our investment strategies to align with the NRI Roadmap recommendations.”
